The FLIR C2 Thermal Camera is a pocket sized infrared solution for anyone who needs to quickly check thermal patterns to confirm proper installation of building, electrical, and mechanical components. At just under an inch thick, the FLIR C2 is a smart phone sized infrared camera that can be stored in any pocket, bag, or tool belt to be ready when you need it. Housed in impact resistant rubberized plastic, the FLIR C2 is rugged enough to withstand even toolbox storage. It can take and download thermal images, and even stream live video to a computer for presentations or analysis.

The FLIR C2 is built around the tiny FLIR Lepton thermal core, measuring about 3/8” cubed. This gives the C2 a resolution of 80 x 60, for a total of 4800 pixels. While not much by digital camera standards, the C2 is able to discern most basic insulation and overheating issues. The thermal sensitivity (NETD) is a quite good 0.10 °C, so the camera can see rather small temperature changes associated with water damage or missing insulation. The FLIR C2 can view and measure the temperature of objects from 14 to 302 °F (-10 to 150 °C). The camera is focus free from 6” to infinity, giving you quick and simple one handed operation. The lens of the C2 is a wide 42 degrees to better view large wall sections in a building, or more of an electrical panel while standing relatively close. Available color palettes include Iron, Rainbow, Rainbow HC, and Gray. Many more palettes are available in the included software.

Cameras and Touch Screen

Built in to the face of the FLIR C2 are two cameras, one for the thermal image, and another to capture a digital image. These images are stored together whenever the large capture button on top of the C2 is pressed. This makes for excellent reporting and documentation when you need to relay your findings to a colleague or customer. While the thermal camera can “see” even in the dark, the FLIR C2 includes a bright LED light to act a flash for the digital camera, or to help you find your way in dark work areas. The screen of the camera is a beautiful capacitive touch screen that makes for easy navigation and excellent viewing. It will even rotate automatically to orient horizontally or vertically as needed.

A fantastic effect of having both thermal and digital cameras is that the FLIR C2 can combine the images into one new image known as MSX. This uses information from the digital picture such as edges, words, and patterns, to add detail to the thermal image. Yet MSX does not detract from the coloring and temperature data of the thermal image. The net result is an MSX image that is much easier to understand thanks to some visible light cues that your eyes are used to seeing. Using the FLIR C2 camera feels almost as natural as using your digital camera.

Download and Video

Images taken with the FLIR C2 Thermal Camera are stored to internal flash memory. Up to 500 sets of pictures (thermal, digital, and MSX) can be stored to the camera. All images can be recalled and viewed right on the screen of the C2, and even deleted if you need to free up some space. Downloading pictures is accomplished through connecting the included USB cable to your Apple or Windows computer. When connected with the cable, the FLIR C2 can also stream live thermal video (without temperature data) to your PC. This stream can be recorded through the free FLIR Tools software.

Unlike some less expensive thermal cameras, the FLIR C2 captures fully radiometric images. This means that every one of the 4800 pixels has a temperature associated with it. While a center spot can be used to check temperature while using the C2, every pixel in a captured image can be analyzed when downloaded to the free FLIR Tools software. You can add more spot meters, or place a box on the image that will automatically identify the hot and cold spots. Or you can show only areas above or below a user set temperature in a completely different color. FLIR Tools also makes an excellent way to organize your images or create professional reports. Your reports can even be customized with your own logo. If you use a different reporting software, all FLIR images are conveniently stored as common jpg images, and are easily imported into any program. The free FLIR Tools software is compatible with both Apple and Windows operating systems.

The battery of the FLIR C2 is an internal lithium-ion battery that can power the unit for 2 hours. Charging is accomplished by connecting the camera to the power adapter and charging for a short 1.5 hours. To conserve power the FLIR C2 will shut off automatically after a few minutes. Weighing in at under 1/3 of a pound, the C2 is a lightweight and convenient thermal camera ready to help you make quick infrared inspections of your work. While it will not replace a professional camera for a thorough investigation, it is well suited for contractors, electricians, HVAC techs, and others who need to make a fast check. You and your clients alike will be impressed by what you can see with the FLIR C2 Thermal Camera, and it may just earn a place in your tool belt.

I used the first C-2 purchased on several projects.  I found it to be adequate for the field data required.  So, I bought this second one.
I do not buy two of something that does not work.  Don't expect the same images you would get with a unit costing 10X as much and you will be as pleased as I am. Functional and a great value.
