The FLIR E95 Thermal Camera sets a new standard for what is possible in handheld infrared technology. Astounding image quality is delivered by the completely new detector, lens, and laser autofocus. The bright touchscreen displays images in vivid color, while providing an intuitive, multi-touch interface. New calibration technology allows accessory lenses to be added to the FLIR E95 without factory recalibration. Lenses can even be swapped between multiple cameras. The tough rubberized housing provides dust, splash, and drop protection for the roughest work environments. For better documentation the FLIR E95 includes all the latest communications abilities, from WiFi and Bluetooth, to built in GPS and digital compass.

With an excellent combination of lens, detector, processing, and glossy screen, the E95 gives a picture that looks even better than its resolution would suggest. The impressive 464 x 348 resolution gives the extra bump you sometimes need over a 320 x 240 camera. Applications from electrical troubleshooting, to building analysis, to facilities maintenance, and even research will be well served by the 161,472 pixels of thermal detection. The FLIR E95 is sensitive to temperature changes as small as 0.03 °C, providing subtle color patterns across the entire target area. For maximum flexibility in imaging and measurement, the E95 includes three temperature ranges, covering from -4 to 2732 °F (-20 to 1500 °C).

One of our favorite features of the FLIR E95 Thermal Camera is the ability to change lenses at any time, even between cameras, without any need for factory recalibration. New technologies have allowed FLIR to store the calibration information to a chip directly on the lens. The camera can read this data and account for any lens attached. Consequently one camera can have multiple lenses, or multiple cameras can share one seldom used lens—all without returning to the factory for recalibration. Lenses are available in 24° standard, 42° wide angle, and 14° telephoto variants.

MSX and UltraMax

Both a thermal camera and a visible light camera are included on the FLIR E95. A visible image is stored with each captured thermal image to better document the surroundings and make for easier interpretation later. Furthermore, the visible camera is used in FLIR’s patented MSX effect, which takes patterns such as words and edges, then embosses these into the thermal image. This happens in real time, and without any loss in the infrared data. MSX allows a scene to look much more recognizable to both the thermographer as well as anyone reading the report. The E95 also includes FLIR’s super-resolution technology called UltraMax. When activated, the E95 will capture 16 thermal images in about a second. Because of the natural movement of the human body, these will be slightly offset. When imported into the free FLIR Tools software, the images will be combined into one new image, with a resulting resolution of 928 x 696, complete with full radiometric data.

Autofocus and Area

Laser autofocus is yet another impressive new feature of the FLIR E95. Press the small button above the trigger and the E95 will activate a built in laser distance meter, then use this data to ensure the camera is perfectly focused. It allows one-handed operation and takes under a second. If the measuring surface is too variable, or if you prefer to dial in the focus yourself, there is also a manual focus ring. The laser distance meter data is captured with the image, providing helpful information about the target area. The FLIR E95 can even use the laser data to help you measure the surface area of a scene. Just use the touchscreen to create a box over the scene, and the camera will display the square footage (or meters) of the area.

The screen of the FLIR E95 camera is a thing of beauty, and we could only wish that all thermal imager screens were this nice. At four inches, it is notably larger than most screens, with enough resolution such that there is no visible pixilation. Even more exciting is the brightness of the screen, and its wide viewing angle is perfect for when you’re using it in awkward areas or with someone looking over your shoulder. The surface of the touchscreen is made of rugged Dragontrail glass for the ultimate in scratch and crack resistance. The screen even allows for multi-touch gestures such as pinch zoom, and swiping from the top to access shortcuts.

Image and Video Capture

The FLIR E95 includes multiple methods to capture the thermal scene. With a pull of the trigger both thermal and visible images are captured to the SD card, which will store thousands of image sets. The E95 can also record thermal or visible video, and even capture video with full radiometric data. Time lapse imaging is also possible, with intervals ranging from 10 seconds to 24 hours. Included with the camera is an HDMI adapter to allow easy video streaming to any variety of projectors, monitors, or televisions. Notating your work is also easier than ever, with text notes, preset notes, and even audio notes through the built in microphone and speaker. Images and videos can be organized into folders by job, location, date, or however you choose.

Communications options abound in the FLIR E95. Wireless will connect your smartphone or tablet to the camera through the free FLIR Tools app for iOS or Android. With WiFi you can mirror the camera screen, and capture images for quick texting or emailing. Even create a full report right in the app. Bluetooth will connect the camera with any FLIR or Extech electrical or moisture meter equipped with Meterlink. Data from the connected clamp meter or other meter will be captured and stored alongside the thermal image for easy documentation. GPS and a digital compass record information about location and direction so there is no question later as to which target is in the image. All these communication capabilities can be turned on or off as needed. The E95 also includes FLIR Tools software for PC or Mac. In this desktop software you have almost limitless palette and measurement options, organized image storage, and professional reporting functionality.

A full array of excellent temperature measurement tools are included on the FLIR E95, including three spot meters, and three area boxes with automatic hot and cold point detection. Color alarms can be set for above, below, or between a user defined range. Imaging palettes are all the best FLIR options, including Iron, Gray, Rainbow, Arctic, Lava, and Rainbow HC. Moisture and insulation alarms are available to help detect building deficiencies. A welcome addition that we have always enjoyed in other FLIR cameras is the programmable "P" button. This is a user definable button that can, for instance, switch between image and video capture, or toggle on and off the measurement functions.
