Features

There’s so much to love about the new FLIR E85 Thermal Camera: resolution and sensitivity well above the norm. A beautiful new touchscreen gives a smartphone style interface with the camera. Lenses can now be added or exchanged between cameras without needing to be sent back for recalibration. The E85 even includes a new laser autofocus system that ensures your images always look as crisp as they can. All this is housed in a tough, rubberized black housing that protects from dust and water, while providing the look and feel you expect from a professional tool.

Imaging

The excellent image starts with a thermal core with a resolution of 384 x 288 (110,592 pixels). The detector has a sensitivity of 0.03 °C, better than almost any available camera, and provides excellent gradation of subtle temperature patterns. The FLIR E85 can take images and measure temperatures of objects across a huge range, from -4 to 2192 °F (-20 to 1200 °C). Multiple lenses are available for the E85, including a standard 24°, a wide angle 45°, and a telephoto 14° lens. FLIR embeds calibration data on a chip on each lens, making them compatible with any FLIR Exx-Series camera without needing factory recalibration. So it’s easy to order a lens later, or to share a lens among multiple cameras. Just attach the new lens and activate the onboard lens calibration wizard.

MSX and UltraMax

The FLIR E85 includes both a thermal camera as well as a visible light camera. The latter is helpful in capturing the visible scene and makes for clearer reporting. The visible camera also forms part of FLIR’s MSX image technology. MSX discovers pattern and edge details in the visible image, then embosses these into the thermal image in an unobtrusive way that preserves all thermal data. The result is an image that feels more natural to the human eye, yet still contains the heat patterns you're looking for. The FLIR E85 camera also includes UltraMax super-resolution capabilities. When UltraMax is enabled, the E85 will take 16 thermal images and store these together. When imported to the included FLIR Tools software, the images are combined into a new image with a true thermal resolution of 768 x 576, or double the original resolution.

Autofocus

Built into the FLIR E85 is a laser distance meter that can precisely measure distance out to 100 ft (30m). When you press the autofocus trigger button, the camera uses this distance data to provide a precise automatic focus. A manual focus is also included in case of an uneven target or if need a different view. The laser distance meter in the E85 can also be used to calculate square footage of an area in the scene. Simply add a measurement box to the touchscreen and adjust with your fingers to the desired size, then the screen will show the area measurement. All distance and area data is captured with any corresponding image and stored for download in FLIR Tools.

Touchscreen

The touchscreen of the FLIR E85 infrared camera is 30% larger than previous Exx-Series cameras, and has enough resolution that the image does not look pixelated. In fact the image looks great, on a screen that is brighter and more sensitive than any thermal camera screens we have experienced. Between the brightness and the wide 160° viewing angle, the E85 works great in even tough viewing conditions like sunlight, or when reaching into a smaller space. The screen is surfaced with notoriously tough Dragontail glass to resist scratching and cracking. The touchscreen is sensitive enough to incorporate a variety of multi-touch gestures such as swiping down to access shortcuts, or pinching two fingers to zoom the image.

Image and Video Capture

The FLIR E85 camera can capture still images (thermal and visible), video (thermal or visible), and even radiometric video with full thermal data for every pixel. An included adapter allows you to output the live video stream to any HDMI device, including most monitors, projectors, and televisions. Notations can be added to your images in multiple ways. Audio notes can be recorded through the onboard microphone, and played back through the onboard speaker. Text notes can be added through the touchscreen keyboard. Or frequently used notes can be stored ahead of time and recalled for quick attachment to any image. Your media can now be organized into any folder structure you choose, whether by location, job name, etc.

Communications

Communications to and from the FLIR E85 are better than ever. Built in WiFi allows you to connect the camera to your smartphone or tablet even without joining an existing network. The free FLIR Tools app for iOS and Android allow you to view the live video stream from the camera, capture images or video, and even prepare and email a report straight from your phone. Bluetooth technology will connect the E85 to a large variety of FLIR and Extech clamp meters, multimeters, and moisture meters (must be equipped with Meterlink). Integrated GPS and Compass functions in the E85 will capture relevant geographical data so you will never again wonder where you took that perfect image.

Measurements

Included with the E85 camera is full desktop software to help organize your images, make measurements, and create reports. FLIR Tools is compatible with PC and Mac platforms. Even onboard the camera itself you can perform multiple temperature measurements including 3 spot meters and three area boxes with hot and cold point detection. Color alarms can be set to help visualize areas that are above, below, or between user specified temperatures. Similarly, moisture and insulation alarms allow you to more quickly visualize certain building deficiencies. Color palettes built into the FLIR E85 camera include Iron, Gray, Rainbow, Arctic, Lava, and Rainbow HC.
